Join me for a 5-day, cultural and creative exploration inspired by place. Learn how to capture your experience of a specific location with a particular group of people at a unique moment in in your lives and use that as a guide, a muse, and an inspiration.
Throughout the week, we will spend time exploring the beauty that our location has to offer through both indoor and outdoor field trips. We will then take this inspiration back to our studio space and explore ways to transfer this to our artwork. Our inspiration can be both literal – an object found or a brochure from a favorite site – and experiential – all the feels you get while wandering through the space. The focus of our work will be mixed media, an approach that offers the freedom to go in many creative directions.
Our studio time will be divided among the following…
-directed demonstrations of mixed media techniques – collage, painting, surface design, hand stitching, mark making and more – where you will be guided through specific projects.
-stretches of uninterrupted time of artmaking allowing you the opportunity to get into the zone and use your inspiration to create.
We will all be working on the same series of projects, but you are encouraged to take them into your own direction. Ultimately, each of your experiences will be unique and so will be your creative makes. As such the supply list includes both specific supplies and personally chosen items.
Artists of all skill levels are welcome to join the adventure and experience A Sense of Place.
About Seth Apter
Seth Apter is a mixed media artist, instructor, author, and designer from New York City. He came to the world of art later in life, transitioning from a full-time career as a psychologist to being a full-time artist and maker. Seth’s artistic practice is based on the concepts of community and collaboration, and he believes in the power of art to bring people together. His work has been exhibited in multiple exhibitions and can be found in numerous books and national magazines. Seth has also published two books of his own, The Pulse of Mixed Media and The Mixed-Media Artist. His love of the creative energy that occurs when artists are brought together has led him to spend a great deal of time teaching workshops – both online and in person across the world. Closer to home, he is an instructor at Pratt Institute in NYC. As a designer, he has created collections with many companies over the years, including Impression Obsession, StencilGirl Products, Spellbinders, Emerald Creek Craft Supplies, WOW, Aladine and PaperArtsy. Art for him is everything and sharing the process in all these different forms makes it even better.
