This is an individualized workshop with a focus on helping attendees better their understanding and use of color along with the option to utilize various new tools for applying paint.   Known for my highly colorful palette knife works, I have a background painting a variety of styles from realism to abstraction before finding what works for me. We all have our own natural proclivities and goals.   Together we will pursue your individual path as I encourage and challenge you to grow to be a better painter by focusing on your use of color and the tools to best help you enliven and/or refine your work.

Schedule overview: Days 1 and 2 will focus on color and application techniques using various tools with still lifes as the subject matter. This will enable me to see how you approach the subject and how you see and interpret what you see, including your style and technique. That way I can work with you individually. On days 3-5 you will be working similar to a professional painter, determining your own choice of subject matter, exploring the best way to present your vision and using the best tools in your toolbox to achieve it.

This is your opportunity, with assistance as may be desired, to explore stylistic changes or concepts you may wish to incorporate, to improve color usage, as well as to improve paint application appropriate to the desired end.

My process of teaching is to pose questions which helps you learn to self-assess, suggest and/or model possible solutions as appropriate, and follow up with you as you proceed.

There will be sporadic tutorials for those interested: perspective (atmospheric and linear), easy ways to incorporate figures in an image, glazing, scumbling, the structure of the face, and other items by request. The learning process is very fluid. We learn from our own exploration as well as from those around us. The studio is open 24/7 and there may be times I will offer an extra session during evening hours for those interested.

About Cynthia Rosen

Cynthia Rosen is a Vermont artist most often recognized for colorful palette knife work. Rosen’s primary fascination is in the movement of color and it’s subtle implication of time. This interest produces works that result in Impressionistic imagery with a modern twist. Rosen’s paintings invite the viewer to meander and weave through the images, usually unrestricted by highly defined shapes thereby bridging the gap between representation and abstraction.

While Rosen no longer participates in plein air events she has in the past garnered numerous awards from some of the most prestigious events in the country.

She has also been featured internationally in many journals, magazines and podcasts, presented numerous times at the famed Plein Air Convention and has two instructional videos through Streamline Art Videos.

She is represented by: Helmholz Fine Art, Manchester, VT; Bryan Fine Art, Stowe, VT; Gallery 46, Lake Placid, NY; and Trippe Gallery in Easton, MD.
